In the heart of the Rhone Valley, right next to the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, lies the Cotes du Rhone Villages appellation. To earn this appellation, the grapes grown here must adhere to the same regulations as the larger Cotes du Rhone region in which it lies but with even more strict wine growing and winemaking rules beyond the region’s norms. The result is Châteauneuf-du-Pape quality wines but at the more approachable Cotes du Rhone pricing. The Domaine des Avaux Cotes du Rhone Villages 2015, produced by a 7th generation winemaker, is an amazing representation of what this appellation can achieve!
The 2015 vintage was one of the best this decade and it shows immediately upon pouring by being packed full of the classic rich and warm southern French character. This blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedre is beautifully fragrant and inviting on the nose displaying dark plum and blueberry characters with subtle spice and roasted almond notes. It is ripe and rounded, finishing long and smooth.
This wine is drinking incredibly right now but has the capacity to hold well for another 5-8 years making it an obvious choice to replenish your holiday-depleted cellar!
