Today’s Thirsty Thursday comes from the heart of Cotes du Rhone, more specifically, the village of Pont-Saint-Esprit. The history of Pont St Esprit goes back thousands of years to Roman occupation. In fact, a 19-arch bridge originally constructed during the 12th century still stands as tall as the day it was built!
In more recent history, the area has started to pump out some of the Rhone Valley’s finest wines. The soils of sand and clay make for ideal growing conditions and the abundunt sunshine is essential for the grapes achieving ideal ripeness. At Domaine Clos des Miran, the winemakers go to extreme measures to maintain these perfect soil conditions. They even go as far as using horse-drawn ploughs to till and individually hand-pick each grape rather than using modern machinery. They go the extra mile for their wine and it shows in every bottle!
The Clos des Miran Cuvee Speciale 2013 is blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre and Carignan. It opens with aromas of berries and is slightly peppery. On the palate the terroir shines through beautifully with notes of herbs de Provence. The finish is lively and smooth making the wine the perfect accompaniment to meats, duck and a variety of cheeses
