Just last week it was announced that Minneapolis’ Indeed Brewing Company would be launching an extension of their brewery in Milwaukee. And what a fun coincidence that we’re welcoming Jeff from Indeed back to the store for a free sampling of their beer today from 4-6!
We’ll have their brand new juicy/tropical Flavorwave IPA open to try, which Jeff describes as a “cool kid beer.” He’s also graciously accepted our suggestion of pouring Rum King Imperial Stout for the tasting. Rum barrel beers are pretty hit or miss, and this one falls squarely in the former category. We’ll have one or two other Indeed beers open as well, so you can get yourself psyched up to check out their taproom next June.

It’s Beaujolais season and this week we’re featuring a real beauty! Beaujolais are often regarded as the ideal pairing for Thanksgiving dinner due to their versatility. They have balanced acidity, perfect for cranberry dishes, are often creamy, complementary to mashed potatoes, and most importantly, carry soft tannins, a much needed characteristic for drier meats such as turkey.
The Depagneux Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes 2017 is bursting with aromas of cherry and strawberry. On the palate these flavors carry over with a very smooth, supple texture. The finish is luxurious, cleansing and begging to be paired with your next bite of food. Serve with a slight chill for a real treat!
Milwaukee’s Good City Brewing has grown FAST since we were one of the first Madison accounts to get them a little over a year ago. What used to be a brewery who would load up a van every other week and send someone to the 4-5 stores in the know, is now in the midst of a brand new second brewery in the highly visible Bucks entertainment district outside of the Fiserv Forum. There they’ll have a facility for sour beer and of course, tons of exposure while as many as 17,500 people check out Wisconsin’s newest sporting venue.
We’re happy for Good City and the Bucks, who are undefeated this season at 7-0. So let’s celebrate both entirely prematurely with a great deal on some Good City beer!
Motto – The mosaic-hopped Pale Ale that started it all. Good City’s flagship beer. Grapefruit and mango with a faint bitterness.
Risk – West coast style IPA with pine aromatics that follow through on the palate. A touch of caramel for balance, not too sweet.
Pils – Bready, crisp and clean. Assertive German hops give grassy, herbal notes.
Film Fest Amber Lager – Quite possibly one of my favorite new Oktoberfests this year, but enjoyable long beyond the season. A brighter take on the Marzen style with light biscuit-y notes.
Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is famous throughout the world as one of the most distinctive styles of wine produced. Fresh, vibrant fruit characters and a zingy palate are the classic hallmarks that have turned it into one of the most popular varietals. Today, we are featuring an incredible example at an even more incredible price!
The Matakana Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2016 boasts lively aromas of gooseberry, passionfruit and grapefruit. On the palate these characters carry over with a zesty acidity and beautiful minerality. The finish is dry, clean and crisp.
Today’s Thirsty Thursday features come to us from Motto Wines, offering a new take on California winemaking from the perspective of the renowned winemaking team at Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. Known for producing some of the best-selling wines from Washington State, they’ve branched out by using their Washington process but implementing California grapes, resulting in deliciously unique products!

MOTTO Gung Ho Red Blend 2014
This red blend is full of contrast — rich, yet delicate; fruity, yet structured. Soft floral aromas give way to flavors of blueberry pie and pomegranate with hints of jasmine tea and spice. Perfect along or with a wide variety of foods.
Blend: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Petit Verdot, 12% Petite Sirah, 10% Zinfandel
MOTTO Backbone Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 (supplies limited)
This Cabernet Sauvignon has both backbone and elegance, with a soft and delicate nose of ripe red fruit. Dark, concentrated flavors of red plum, caramel and bright raspberry explode out of the glass for a lasting finish.
Blend: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10 % Petite Sirah
Today’s Thirsty Thursday feature hails from Touraine, France. Touraine is often referred to as the “garden of France” due it’s vast forests, green valleys, numerous orchards and fertile fields. In the heart of the region lies Domaine Desloges, a winery that has been in the hands of the same family for four generations. The knowledge that has been passed down through each generation shines through in every bottle they produce!
The Domaine Desloges Touraine 2017 is comprised of 100% Sauvignon Blanc. It opens with bright aromas of citrus and passionfruit. On the palate it is lively with notes of grapefruit and lemon zest. The finish is crisp and dry with a delicate minerality.

Just because the official Oktoberfest wrapped up on Sunday, you shouldn’t give up on drinking the namesake of the world’s largest beer festival. Some of us, myself included, could drink Oktoberfests/Marzens year round, and today we are totally catering to that crowd.
Oktoberfests are full-bodied and malt driven with an amber hue. Their alcohol content is moderately high, and they feature German hops (duh) for balance, but aren’t perceivably bitter. To boil it all down, they simply taste like fall.

Côtes du Rhône, France is one of the planet’s oldest recognized wine growing regions. The Romans loved how the rocky soils structured the grapes and in 1729, a royal edict was enacted requiring each cask to be branded “C.D.R.” marking the best from the rest. Today’s feature not only continues this tradition of quality, but does so organically just as vintners did hundreds of years ago!
The Domaine Notre Dame des Pallieres Côtes du Rhône 2014 (say that five times fast!) opens with aromas of fresh cherries and strawberries. On the palate the red fruits carry over with hints of herbes de Provence and white pepper. This blend of Grenache (60%), Syrah (35%), and Cinsault (5%) finishes bright, clean and with balanced acidity making it the perfect accompaniment to any meal!
Meridian Vineyards never set out to make overly-complicated wines. They wanted to make approachable wines that fit the easy-going California lifestyle. Their Merlot is no exception and we’ve managed to secure it for a price that even we had trouble believing!
The Meridian California Merlot is a classic expression of the popular varietal. It opens with bright aromas of black cherry, boysenberry cedar and spice notes. The aromas lead to a palate with delicious flavors of rich plum and dark berry fruit. A touch of spice lingers on the long, elegant finish.
Brewery Ommegang is about as Belgian as a brewery can get without actually being in Belgium. Not only do they make a wide range of well-executed Belgian style beers, their parent company is Duvel-Moortgat, makers of the legendary Duvel Golden Ale. Today we’re featuring two of my absolute favorites from Ommegang, Rosetta and Three Philosophers.
If there is a beer that could change your mind on sour beers or fruit beers, Rosetta may be it. Perfectly balanced between aged and new Flemish Brown Ale and blended with the sweetness of the cherries it was aged on for at least three years. It’s a beautiful beer that will pair well with soft cheeses like Brie or Triple Cream.
With all of the beer options out there, it’s easy to forget about beers that are still just as good as the first time you had them. This is your reminder that Three Philosophers is still that awesome. A big, bold (9.7% ABV) Belgian-style Quad that also blends in 2% of Leifmans Kriek for a refined complexity. Tasting notes are figs, brandied cherries and molasses, making for a wonderful pairing with rich and hearty meals like stew and big stinky cheeses.
